Tahajjud Prayer - Salat al-Layl - Namaz e Shab
Imam Ali(as) supplication 108 in Sahifa Alavia after completing the eight unit of mid-night prayers
Allahumma innee as'aluka bi-hurmati man 'adha bika mink
O Allah! I ask You by the honour of that person who has sought refuge in You
Wa laja'a ila 'izzik
And the refuge of Your Honour
Wastazalla bi-fay'ik
Rested in the shade of Your Majesty
Wa'tasama bi-hablik
And was familiar with Your ways
Wa lam yathiq illa bik
And had no hopes from anyone else
Ya jazeelal-'ataya
O the giver of great rewards
Ya mutliqal-usara
O the one to free the indigents
Ya man samma nafsahu min joodihi wahhaba
O the one who has praised Himself with generosity and has named himself "Wahab" (the bestower)
Wa ha ana ad'ooka
And that I call on You
Raghaban wa rahaba
In fear and anxiety
Wa khawfan wa tama'a
In greed and success
Wa ilhafan wa ilhaha
In helplessness and freedom
Wa tadarru'an wa tamalluqa
In gains and loses
Wa qa'iman wa qa'ida
Standing and sitting
Wa raki'an wa sajida
In bowing and prostrating
Wa rakiban wa mashiya
In walking and mounting
Wa dhahiban wa ja'iya
Coming and going
Wa fee kulli halatee
So much so that in all conditions
As'aluka an tusalliya 'ala Muhammadin wa ali Muhammad
I ask You to send Your mercy and blessings on Mohammed and his progeny
Wa an taf'ala bee kadha wa kadha
And to do for me... (ask for Your needs over here)
About Sahifa Alawiyyah
Abdullah bin Saleh Samahiji collected the supplications of Hazrat Ameerul Momineen Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.) and named the collection: Sahifa Alawiyyah.
Other scholars also compiled their collections of Duas related from Imam Ali (a.s.) but the collection that became most popular was that of Abdullah bin Saleh. It had 160 Duas.
Sahifa Alawiyyah was first published in 1305 A.H. (1887 A.D.) from Bombay. Then from Majma’ al-Bahrayn Press, Ludhiana and after this in 1311 A.H. (1893 A.D.) from Tehran. The fourth time it was published from Nizami Press, Lucknow with translation and commentary in 1371 A.H. (1951 A.D.). But it is regretful that it did not mention the sources.
The supplications of Sahifa Alawiyyah can be broadly divided into two sections. The expression of Allah’s slaveship and the entreaties of the supplicant. Each of the supplications is a masterpiece of the expression of ones helplessness before the grandeur of the Almighty and only a personality like Imam Ali (a.s.) could have composed such Duas.
The present English Version is based on the Urdu translation of Sahifa Alawiya by Maulana Sayyid Murtuza Husain Lakhnavi, republished by Hyderi Kutub Khana.
